Digital displays for photos have been around a while—A digital art frame is a type of digital frame specifically designed to display high-quality artwork. To replicate wall art a digital frame is usually quite a bit larger than a digital photo frame, but in the realm of modern display technology both digital photo frames and digital art frames have crossover functionality and usage.

Digital art frames are more expensive and seem to be (at the moment) less commonly used, even though they integrate well into the modern smart home environment. An art frame will offer high resolution, enhanced colour accuracy and contrast, all-in-all they provide a high-end display for your digital portfolio. They also have features like swipe and gesture control, as well as intuitive mobile apps. Digital art frames often come with curated collections of work and many allow for art subscriptions. Of course, they are also the perfect medium in which to add your unique seventy-two collection!

display your digital art

Matte finish—This helps avoid reflections and gives the artwork a more natural appearance. Matte finishes help with fingerprints and are also more scratch-resistant.

Size —There's a good choice of size to work with any space. The larger the display, the larger the price tag, however a very large display such as the Samsung Frame is also a TV which makes the price point a little more palatable.

High Resolution—We’d suggest a minimum of 1024 × 768 resolution, but you’d be looking for a higher resolution if your display is larger than 20inches, for example The Frame has a beautiful 4k resolution.

Accurate colours and temperature—To accurately display your digital art you’re looking for colour accuracy and a neutral colour temperature. Colour accuracy is even more important if you want vibrant colours and deep blacks.

Mobile App and control—This is the fun part, where mobile apps and the physical control of your frame offer a highly interactive and exciting user experience. With some displays, managing content is made easy via an app or with swipe / gesture control.

Mounting Options—As with a traditional art piece your digital art frame is best mounted on a wall, surrounded by blank space, to help to draw attention to the artwork. There’s a bit to consider as the cables should feed through the wall to give a clean appearance. Having versatile mounting options can make life easier, for example, a swivel mount can be great for easily switching between landscape and portrait collections. Many digital art frames support or even come with swivel mounts. If your frame doesn’t support a swivel mount option, mounting in landscape is generally the way to go.

Where it’s simply not viable to wall mount, digital art frames can be sat on a table or something similar. We quite like mounting on a dedicated easel and really making this a feature in a given space.

Content—You want to be ale to display your seventytwo artwork so being able to upload your own art work must be an option. Look for a frame that has a good amount of unpaid content—whilst subscriptions are great way to access large amounts of work it’s often more than most people need.

Art really does define your home or work space—it can set a mood, change a setting, and similar to a music playlist a dedicated art playlist can really change the dynamic of any event, albeit a quiet night in or raging party! Digital art frames are a must for modern living.

There are a variety of digital frames on the market and these are a selection based on our experience. We’ll continue to add frames as we get to know them and please do let us know if you think there’s a product that’s worth shouting about.

what to look for in your digital art frame?

meural canvas II

The Meural Canvas II is brought to you by Netgear and is the perfect choice for real art enthusiasts who are looking for a way to display digital art and have the ultimate conversation starter.

With its high-resolution display and anti-glare matte surface, every image displays lifelike detail and colour depth that rivals traditional prints. The Canvas II boasts an incredible User Interface, either at the frame itself or via the app. Smart features like gesture control and customisable playlists, making it not just a piece of art but an interactive experience. Choose from your personal photo library, your seventytwo collection or take out a subscription service and access over 30,000 art pieces!

There are two size options — 16” x 24” (21.5” diagonal display) or 19”x 29” (27” diagonal display) and a choice of four frame colours — black, dark wood, light wood and white. The sleek modern design really does complement any decor.

The swivel mount is sold separately and allows for the frame to be easily rotated horizontally or vertically — we do love the fact that if it’s not viable to wall hang, the canvas II still looks great as a freestanding frame, on a unit or easel.

The stunning visual quality and use friendly interface make this one a real game changer and a must for the genuine art enthusiast. We love it!

samsung - the frame

The Frame, from Samsung— we really do rate this one and find it’s not just the ultimate 4k art display but an exceptional smart TV. It’s not a bulky black box and to those who don’t know, it really does look like a piece of art. Of course, as a fully functioning TV and digital art frame the price point is much higher than anything else here, but we’d argue it’s well worth it.

In art mode, The Frame offers access to an extensive gallery of over 1,400 curated pieces from renowned artists around the globe. You can easily customise and rotate through different artworks and of course you can add your own images for a more personalised experience. The Frame uses the Samsung Smart Things App which, whilst perhaps not the most intuitive at first, it works just fine. Unfortunately there's no gesture control with The Frame.

The frame comes with a one connect box which is the hub for all connections including: power, HDMI, coaxial, ethernet and USB. The connection to the TV is via the Samsung ‘One invisible connection cable” which is a 15m / 16.4ft fibre cable. The big question about the one connect box is where to put it — it needs a surface to sit on, power close by and reasonable airflow around it. Often people will choose to put the box in the wall cavity right behind the TV or alternatively in a cupboard (that’s reasonably close to the screen). Obviously the most elegant way to run the fibre cable is through the wall. Where this isn’t possible you will need to allow for the fact that a cable will be visible, we have seen this done and whilst not invisible it is very discreet! Some people even paint it to further hide it.

The Frame comes in various sizes starting at 32” all the way through to a massive 86”. We have found that the 43” offers both a great TV and art display in a modest sized room.

Out of the box it comes with a black frame but there’s the option to add brown, teak or white bezel frame upgrades. There’s also the option of a rotating wall mount, not something we’ve used and it is a it pricey–but it does look very cool. More info about that here.

In art mode The Frame is designed with energy efficiency in mind, utilising a motion sensor that can automatically turn off the display when you leave the room. This innovative feature not only saves energy but also prolongs the life of the TV, making it an environmentally friendly choice for your home.

The Samsung Frame is such a great choice if you’re looking to experience the perfect fusion of art and technology.

canvia digital art canvas & canvia k

The Canvia digital art canvas is aimed at traditional art collectors who value a high-quality 27” display.

The Canvia supports casting of personal photos or images via user uploads or login via Google Photos which is a nice feature. Canvia also offers an art service subscription and additionally partner with digital artists to display their art. With its customisable display options and various display modes the Cavia offers everything you need from a digital display.

The Hi resolution screen is stunning and automatic dimming depending on the ambient light is a lovely feature. The app is user friendly and allows for seamless connectivity to your art collection. We do love the information that Canvia provides, including artist biographies and historical context.

Unlike the Canvas II the Canvia doesn’t have a rotating mount but of course images can still be viewed in both landscape and portrait, no drama!

Canvia also offer the Canvia K which comes in 5”, 7” and 10” sizes being a very budget friendly option whilst maintaining that high quality you’d expect from Canvia. It can be easily connected to your computer to enable your latest photos or digital art to be displayed.

pix star

Whilst the pix star is really a digital photo frame, it does allow you to display artwork, slideshows and, as another budget friendly option we thought we’d include it.

It has an intuitive interface that makes setup and navigation a breeze. Whether you're tech-savvy or a beginner, you'll appreciate how easy it is to set and use. The remote access feature means that family members can send images directly to the frame from anywhere in the world.

Visually the screen is excellent, boasting an impressive high-resolution display, with vivid colours and sharp detail. Pix star offer a 10" and 15” display and while this is bigger than most other digital photo frames on the market, it’s still quite a bit smaller than other dedicated digital art frames and digital canvases—but you get what you pay for!

The pix star is also equipped with additional features like video playback and music integration which is nice to see at this price point.

We often hear of people having something like the pix star in a secondary space such as a bedroom or study. Depending on what you want, how you intend to use it and the size of your space, the pix star may be just perfect as your one and only, or secondary digital art display.
